1958-60 DETAILS THAT COUNT Some eighteen years ago Kevin DeVries did a series of technical articles in Late Great Chevys monthly on detailing your 1958-64 full size Chevrolet. Since that time many new detailing decals have been reproduced. The merger of Late Great Chevys and Eckler's industries all new numbersThis along with the many years since this information first appeared has lead use to feel that ifs time to once again this information. Nothing makes a fully restored Chevy stand out more than to look under the hood or into the trunk and see the attention to detailing that decals can give your Chevy. The information in this and following tech articles will be most beneficial to the Chevy owner who is restoring his or her Chevy to factory specification. These articles and illustrations will only address the most basic and most asked about detailing decals. This month we will look at detailing 1958-60 Chevys, later on we will the same information on the 1961-64 Chevys. Detailing items come basically in three different forms - first is the crack and type of decal where you the off the back of the decal then apply the decal to the car - the second type of detailing item is the bolt, rivet or wire on item - and the third type is the submerge in warm water, then slide decal off type. These are the same type of decals you used when building model cars as a youth. Please note that these tech articles will not go into great details as to how many inches from a specific location the decal or sticker should go on your Chevy. It will only give the area where the sticker or decal is When GM these items on a Chevy, they didn't use exact angles or measure so many inches from this corner or end when applying these items. We will leave that detail up to your discretion.As with any type of decal application, cleaning and of the area is a must. The following are the most often asked about detailing items - now is the time to give your Chevy the details that will make it stand out at your next car show! AIR CLEANER DECALS PIN 40-141872-1 is the 283 or 348 2bbl and 4bbl air cleaner decal. This is a crack and decal which is on the end of the air cleaner snout. PIN 40-141915-1 is the 283 or 348 2bbl 4bbl air cleaner decal. This is a crack and decal which is on the end of the air cleaner snout. PIN 40-141857-1 348 tri-power 3x2bbl air cleaner decal. This is a crack and decal which is between the two snouts of the air cleaner base. 6 CYLINDER VALVE COVER DECAL PIN 40-169383-1 is the Blue Flame 140 6-cylinder valve cover decal. This is the type decal which must be submerged in hot water for a few minutes to remove the decal from the backing This decal is installed on the side of the valve cover in the area shown on the illustration. Proper cleaning of the valve cove r is a must if you want this decal to stay in CRANK CASE BREATHER CAP DECALS PIN 537003 is the orange and black crank case breather cap decal. This decal is used on all 1958 6-cylinder and VS models. This decal is the hot water submersible type, on breather cap as the illustration. PIN 40-169382-1 is the orange and black crank case breather cap decal. This decal is used on all 1959-60 6-cylinder and VS models. This decal is the hot water submersible type, on breather cap as the illustration. GENERATOR DETAILING TAGS PIN 40-169377-1 is the generator warning tag for all 6 8 cylinder Corvette and cars. To install this warning tag you will need to remove the field wires from the field terminal of your generator. Simply slip this decal over the top of the terminal and reinstall the wires. PIN 40-168983-1 is the generator tag. This tag is of a three tag detail - generator, starter distributor . To install this new generator tag simply remove the old aluminum and rivet on the new tag. You will have to hand scamp new numbers on this tag; this can be done by using a set of hand stamp numbers and letters. PIN 40-171616-1 are the new rivets needed to install the detailing tags in P;N 563138 OIL CANISTER DECAL PIN 40-141859-1 is the VS oil canister decal. Install this decal on the canister as shown in illustration. This is another of the submerge in hot water type decal, after a few minutes in the hot water slide decal off backing to location on canister. HARRISON AIR CONDITIONING TAG PIN 40-170089-1 is the Harrison air conditioning aluminum tag. This tag is installed inside the evaporator box of the air conditioner. Once the evaporator is attached to the firewall of the car you can no longer see this tag. This tag can only be installed on your 1958-60 Chevy if you remove the evaporator from the firewall of your car. No Illustration is available showing location on evaporator box. AIR CONDITIONNG COMPRESSOR DECAL PIN 562605 is the air conditioning compressor decal. This decal is installed on the top of the compressor as shown in the illustration. This is another of the submerge in hot water type decal, after a few minutes in the hot water slide decal off backing to location RADIATOR WARNING COOLANT TAG PIN 40-169381-1 is the radiator warning coolant tag. This tag is installed with a wire around the filler neck of the radiator. TIRE INFLATION DECAL PIN 40-169384-1 is the tire inflation decal. This decal is installed in one of the indentations inside the glove box door. This is also a submerge in hot water type decal, after a few minutes in the hot water slide decal off backing to location. AIR CONDITIONING WINDOW DECAL PIN 40-166906-1 is the Chevrolet air conditioning window decal. This decal is used on all cars equipped with air conditioning. The illustrations show the location for application of this decal, note that each model has a different location. This is also a submerge in hot water type decal, after a few minutes in the hot water slide decal off backing to location. JACKING POSITRACTION REAR END INSTRUCTION PIN 40-139131-1, PIN 40-139139-1, PIN 517097 are 1958-60 car jacking instruction sheets. These are glue in sheets which are on the underside of the trunk lid, see illustrations for location. PIN 40-169376-1 is the 1958 station wagon jacking instruction sheet. This glue in sheet is on the underside of the spare wheel cover, see illustrations for location. PIN 517165 is the 1959 El Camino jacking instruction sheet. This glue in sheet is on the underside of the spare wheel cover, see illustrations for location. PIN 40-169376-1 is the rear end instruction sheet.
