Designed to improve driving ergonomics and safety, it supports 3 or 4-speed automatic transmissions and allows continued use of the original dash shift indicator. This upgrade is essential for classic car enthusiasts seeking improved control and comfort.
Construction and Appearance. Constructed with durable materials, this steering column features a black powder-coated finish that provides a sleek, corrosion-resistant surface. The design incorporates robust 2-inch diameter tubing and shafts and includes factory-style knobs, levers, and horn components to maintain classic aesthetics while offering modern reliability.
Installation. Installation requires moderate automotive skill, including shaft modification and coupler installation for manual box applications. Typically, no drilling is required, but a new floor mount and appropriate linkage components must be installed, as the original floor mount will not fit with this column. A rag joint is also needed to couple shafts and reduce vibration.
Application. This column is specifically designed to fit the 1957 Chevy Bel Air, 1957 Chevy 150, 1957 Chevy 210, and 1957 Chevy Nomad models. It is incompatible with early Powerglide transmissions due to reverse shift pattern differences, and cable shift linkages are not recommended for Tri-Five models. Note that the steering wheel moves 2 inches closer to the driver with the tilt column, but this can be offset by using the straight column shift or a "Shorty" 9-bolt adapter to adjust the steering wheel position.
