    Description

In 1965, Ford changed the 289 Mustang engine's bellhousing bolt pattern from 5 bolts to 6 bolts to fit an oversized clutch that was being offered at the time. Nowadays it's common to use the difference in the number of bolts to identify earlier 289s from later engines.

    Mustang engines that were considered 1964 5-bolt engines were coded F (260 V8) & D (regular-fueled 289 4V), while ones coded C (289 2V) & A (premium-fueled 289 4V) were 1965 6-bolt engines.
