      Most enthusiasts know that the sending unit gas tank is located in the fuel tank, where a float made of foam is connected to a thin metal rod. The end of this rod is mounted to a resistor which indicates fuel level. The fuel has to drop below a certain level before the float starts to drop, to indicate a low amount of fuel left in the car. Since spending it's time in a very inhospitable environment, the sending unit in your gas tank can become faulty or misaligned, which can misrepresent how much gas you have left.
