With the death of company founder Henry Ford in 1947 and the U.S. entering full post-war recovery mode, the decade spanning 1949 to 1959 brought lots of new models to the Ford lineup. Scion Henry Ford II was quick to capitalize and chart a new course for the future.

Bigger, more stylish automobiles began to roll off the assembly line. Many of these cars even looked fast, with ponton styling, sloping roofs and aerodynamic curves in all the right places. These attractive automobiles backed up their appearances with powerful V-8 motors. Offerings in the years that followed the introduction of the new Mercury Eight included such models as the Monterey, eventually available in two-door, four-door and convertible options, the Turnpike Cruiser and the Park Lane.

The public reception was enthusiastic, buoyed by the appearance of fast Mercurys in movies. Folks began creating lead sleds for hot rodding or simply for displaying at meets and shows.
